When Johnson wasn't saying howdy to passing motorists, he told me how he came to own his car. "When I got it, it had 4000 miles on it and a pair of bald rear tires. First the kid wanted $5000 and then $4000. I borrowed $2500 from the bank and went over to his place with a six-pack of beer. I set the six-pack on the hood, and by the time we'd drunk it all I'd got him down to $3300. It cost me $900 that first year just to insure it."
